The Adoption Process for LGBTQ+ Couples

There are three types of adoptions available to LGBTQ+ couples.

These adoptions are:

  • Joint adoption by a married couple. In Florida, only married same-sex couples are permitted to file for a joint adoption.
  • Single adoption by an LGBT parent. If a same-sex couple isn’t married, or an LGBTQ+ individual wishes to be a single parent, they are permitted to adopt a child through a private agency or the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF). If they go through the DCF, they will need to take classes, go to interviews, answer questionnaires, and schedule a home visit. A private agency is less meticulous in their process, but are frequently more expensive.
  • Second parent adoption. An LGBTQ+ individual with a child can arrange for a second-parent adoption for their same-sex spouse.
